What are the best neighborhoods to live in Chicago?

If there is one thing I’ve learned over nearly 22 years of helping people find home in Chicago, it’s that this city isn’t just one big metropolis—it is a collection of distinct, vibrant communities. While the official city map lists 77 community areas, locals know we actually have over 100 unique neighborhoods.

As someone who considers myself the welcome wagon in Chicago, I have always loved all the different neighborhoods. There are so many great and unique pockets here that even when I’ve thought about moving over the years, I still have a hard time deciding where to go! Every area has so many wonderful aspects, and it’s crazy to think that in a single lifetime, you’ll never get to live in all the places you want to explore across the city.

Having grown up here—riding along to lakefront open houses with my mom as a kid—I fell in love with the stories these streets tell. Now, after helping hundreds of buyers, sellers, and investors navigate this market, I know that finding your spot comes down to one core thing: matching your lifestyle with the right neighborhood energy.

How Does the North Side Compare to the South Side?

Whenever clients sit down with me to narrow down their search, we always start with geography and how they actually live day-to-day. Lake Michigan anchors us to the east, the river cuts through the middle, and the city naturally breaks into distinct zones.

If you are very family-oriented and looking for specific schools, that’s going to dictate where you live—versus if you like to go out and live a very active lifestyle, where certain neighborhoods offer much more of that atmosphere.

  • The North Side: Vibrant, high-energy, and extremely walkable. If you settle in Lincoln Park or Lakeview, your routine will revolve around classic vintage walk-ups, local coffee spots, and easy access to the Red and Brown CTA lines.

  • The South Side: Geographically expansive, rich in history, and deeply neighborhood-centric. Areas like Hyde Park bring a green, intellectual feel anchored by the University of Chicago, while neighborhoods like Beverly feature classic Chicago bungalows, spacious yards, and easy street parking.

  • The West Side & West Town: Creative and fast-paced. Spots like Logan Square, Wicker Park, and Pilsen are packed with historic Greystones, industrial lofts, incredible street art, and some of the best food and live music in the country.

  • Downtown / The Loop: Built for high-rise lovers and culture seekers. If you want to live right near the action, or if you’re looking for a second home or pied-à-terre, downtown is usually the place to be for convenient access to world-class dining, theater, and lakefront views.

How Do You Choose the Right Neighborhood for You?

The fun thing about figuring out a neighborhood is that there might not be just one right answer. Buying a home is one of the biggest financial and emotional commitments you will ever make, and the process should feel exciting—not overwhelming. When I build a customized plan for my clients, we focus on a few key steps:

  1. Map your commute and daily routines. Understanding what your daily travel looks like—whether to your office or where you spend most of your time—is essential. Proximity to your preferred CTA line or Metra station will shape your daily quality of life.

  2. Design your ideal weekends. Spend time thinking about how you want to spend your Saturdays. Are you walking to indie boutiques, lounging on the beach, exploring Michelin-starred spots in Fulton Market, playing pickleball, or relaxing in a backyard?

  3. Choose your housing style. Decide whether you see yourself in a full-service high-rise downtown, a vintage two-flat with a shared yard, or a new construction build tailored to your exact tastes.

  4. Explore at different times. Spending time in different neighborhoods across different seasons and times of the day is crucial. Grab a coffee on a Saturday morning to check out the foot traffic, then swing back by on a Tuesday evening to gauge parking, noise, and overall street energy.

Thinking about making a move in Chicago or the North Shore? Whether you’re buying your very first home, looking for new construction, or exploring investment properties, I’d love to help you navigate all the incredible options this city has to offer. Reach out anytime to start the conversation!
